Dinosaurs in Scripture

The word "dinosaur" was not invented until the early 19th century, so it is not a word that you'll find in scripture. But, you will find an accurate descriptions of us.

Dinosaurs In Scripture

Job 40:15-18

This first quote describes me, a sauropod dinosaur. Can you think of any other animal that has a tail like a cedar tree?

Behold now, Behemoth, which I made as well as you;
He eats grass like an ox.
Behold now, his strength in his loins
And his power in the muscles of his belly.
He bends his tail like a cedar;
The sinews of his thighs are knit together.
His bones are tubes of bronze;
His limbs are like bars of iron.

As you read the next scripture, keep in mind that dinosaurs are land animals. That's right! We lived on land and are beasts of the land. But, of course, you knew that.

Genesis 1:24-27 - Day Six of Creation

Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth [dinosaurs] after their kind”; and it was so. God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good.

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Remember we were not called "dinosaurs" until the 19th century. What were we called before that? Dragons. That's why you hear so much about dragon slayers, like St. George. That's why you hear about dragon masters in China. And that's why dragons are mentioned over 20 times in the Old Testament.

Jeremiah 14:6

And the wild asses did stand in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass.

Psalm 74:13

Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters.

Micah 1:8

Therefore I will wail and howl, I will go stripped and naked: I will make a wailing like the dragons, and mourning as the owls.

Yes, God's Word talks about us. We were created on the same day as mankind, and we survived until relatively recently. So don't write off dragons as fairy tales. They were us... dinosaurs... a part of God's creation.
